  Description

The world of the future is on the brink of collapse - As the deadly pandemic rages, Brandon and his family must decide how far they are willing to go to save the world.

In just six short months, the pandemic brought more death and destruction to the world than any war ever could. Countries go dark one by one as death totals continue to rise. Just when the government thinks they have a handle on it, another wave sweeps through, decimating the population.

After six months spent pent-up in his parent’s home, Brandon Demarco is on edge. His father is hiding something, sidestepping the subject anytime Brandon comes to him with questions, and the endless barrage of family nights is slowly driving him mad.

With no work to occupy his mind and nobody to satiate his desires, Brandon finally escapes his family’s estate after months of lockdown and drowns his frustrations in illegal parties, drinking, and women.

But when local case counts begin to rise, Brandon’s father finally entrusts him with a long-held family secret -- A secret that can help not just end the pandemic but prevent it from ever happening.

Will Brandon be able to put away his selfish desires and save the world, or will his indecision doom humanity to extinction?

  About This Author

  Chapter One

“Dr. Oriel is dead,” His father said. The news sent chills down his spine.

  “What do you mean, father?”

Collapsing in his office, his father rubbed his temple. The news obviously pained him.

“There’s a lockdown. We’re meant to be indoors. How did he die?”

“His daughter caught the disease, and he insisted on seeing her despite pleas from his wife and other children.”

“But they have barrier rooms. He could have watched her through a glass screen.”

  “He refused, son.”

  The realization dawned on him.

“Shit……he went into her isolation room?” Brandon asked in surprise.

“Yes, he said he wouldn’t let her die like that. He was willing to die with her.”

  “When did he die?”

“Last night. His daughter died two days ago.”

“He died so quickly,” Brandon exclaimed.

“He was diabetic and hypertensive, Brandon. Medical conditions speed up the decline.”

  “It’s a huge blow to Demarco’s.”

  “We will rise again.”

He looked at his father and nodded stiffly. Dr. Oriel was the head of the chemistry section of Demarco’s lab. He was one of the world’s finest scientists. Apart from Brandon, his father, and a few other scientists, Dr. Oriel was among those who had kept the lab at the forefront of scientific success over the years. Now that he was gone, they will need a replacement as soon as possible.

He thought the pandemic was enough distraction.

“We will need to call his team members.”

“Of course, father, I will arrange that.”

  “Okay.”

“You wanted to tell me what grandfather said to you?” He pushed.

His father looked to the door, signaling for Brandon to leave. He told him he’d tell him later.

Brandon nodded his head in understanding and got up to leave. His mother was not in the hallway this time. His father had tried to tell him two days ago, but his mother interrupted their discussion and stopped the revelation.

She insisted his father shouldn’t say anything. As he walked towards his room, he replayed the scenario again in his mind.

“I fear this was what your great grandfather was talking about,” His father said, closing his eyes firmly.

“What do you mean?” He asked.

“We must act soon, son,” he said, opening his eyes.

  “Dad, I don’t understand.“

  “Your great grandfather……….”

His mother suddenly walked in, obviously angry.

“We agreed not to tell him anything, James…….”

“Irene, are you telling me to ignore our one chance to save the world?”

“We can fix this?” Brandon asked in surprise.

Suddenly his adrenaline kicked in. His heart rate increased, and he felt re-energized.

  “How, dad?”

“It’s not about saving the world. It’s about the promise we made to each other ……….” His mother continued, ignoring him.

“We can’t be sentimental about this. People are dying. Children are dying. You are too soft-hearted to ignore that …….”

“JAMES!!!!, Yes, I am too soft-hearted, and that’s why I’m not going to let you involve my son in all this.”

“Wait, what’s going on?” Brandon asked, confused.

There were a few times he had seen his mother angry, which was one of the moments. She was upset. No one spoke. His parents just stared hard at each other as though communicating through silence.

“Dad, mum,.. what’s going on?” he asked again.

His dad was the first one to break the eye contact.

  “Nothing, son,“ he said stiffly.

Brandon could see defeat in his eyes.

“What do you mean nothing? You said there was a way to stop all these, so how come now you are saying nothing all of a sudden”

“If your father said nothing, it means there is nothing,” His mother said calmly.

  “But……”

“Just drop it, Brandon….” his father said.

Upset, he left the office and made up his mind to go back to his own house. There was something they were not saying, and he wouldn’t be treated like a fool or a child.

He went upstairs and started packing his things. Priscilla walked in on him and gave him a questioning look, but he ignored her and continued.

  “What’s wrong?”

  He continued ignoring her.

  “Come on, bro, what’s up?”

He stopped and sat on the bed.

“Dad called me into his office and mentioned how there was a way to save the world from all this.”

“Oh my God, finally…..” Priscilla said excitedly.

“That was how I felt too, but he didn’t tell me what it was before mum walked in and stopped him.”

  “Why?”

“I have no idea. She mentioned they had an agreement not to say anything.”

  “What does that mean?”

“I have no idea, and Dad wouldn’t talk about it. They were obviously going to have words.”

  “Now I am confused.”

“Same here. What got to me was the fact that I tried finding out what was wrong, but they shut me down, and told me nothing was wrong. They didn’t give me an answer.”

  “And that was it?”

  “Yeah.”

“But why will she stop daddy from letting you in on the possibility of saving the world. I mean, she would want that.“

“That’s what I don’t understand, Priscilla. It still doesn’t make sense to me. What are they hiding? What agreement did they have?”

“Is that why you are upset?”

“Yeah, because I am not a child. They should have explained, at least. I felt so stupid.”

“Husband and wife will always share secrets with each other Brandon. Secrets that even their children will not know about.”

“That wasn’t the issue for me. it’s because people have been working all over the world, trying to find the answer, and they’ve known how to stop it all this time?”

His father stepped into his room at that very moment. He knew his son was upset because Brandon refused to look at him.

“I will talk to you about it later, Brandon,” he said in a whisper and stepped out of the room. He and his sister gave each other a bemused look.

“This house is going to be so awkward until you two clear the air,” she remarked.

“If she doesn’t want him to tell me, do you think he will really talk?”

“I don’t think Daddy just wants to tell you for the world’s sake. If we can stop this pandemic, do you know what it will mean for the Demarco name? It would mean it wasn’t only great grandfather who made history. Dad’s name, and maybe your name, would be remembered forever.”

“Daddy cares about mum’s feelings. He wouldn’t hurt her.”

“Of course he does. But his ambition is strong too. Do you want to bet on it?”

He laughed, releasing the anger that had built up in him.

“Must everything be a challenge to you?”

“Well...are you in or not…?” she said.

  “I won’t…because I have a feeling, you would win.”

She smiled, gave him a soft tug on the

shoulder, and left the room.

  Chapter Two

The pandemic remained a global issue for the next couple of months, and scientists kept working to find answers. A lot gave up and felt it was time for the world to come to an end, but few were still trying. People were still dying, and only developed countries managed to retain any kind of security or economy. However, there was a rapid decline. The UK was able to curtail the disease for a while after they created a machine that detected the illness in people. The machines were stationed everywhere, though they were majorly located in the urban areas. Most hospitals were closed, and only major hospitals with specialist facilities were still left open. The number of health workers declined significantly as many wanted to protect their families as best they could by not exposing themselves to the virus. The lockdown was eased in the UK because there were no new reported cases after the previous ones.

The US government started contemplating the possibility of relocating healthy survivors to another planet or the moon. It sounded absurd initially, but people began considering the possibility.

“Imagine we go to the moon and meet strange aliens we can have sex with.“ Brandon joked to his friend.

“You are never going to change, are you?”

“Of course not. These last few days have been hell for me. The cold last night almost sent me to the club.”

“It’s been a while since we’ve been out.“

“About five months, to be precise. I heard Lucy’s club is open now. Let’s go there tonight.”

  “Brandon, is that safe?”

“Common, no case or death has been reported in the city. Why are you worried?”

  “Tonight, 8pm?”

  “Okay, bro.”

Brandon dropped his phone and went to take a cold shower for the fifth time that day. If he was going to die eventually, why starve his sexual appetite. Five whole months. That’s the longest he’d gone without sex, and he wasn’t having it anymore.

He made up his mind to sleep with as many girls as possible since the world was coming to an end. Why hold back on all the fun and pleasure? He had never been this wild before. Perhaps it’s because he hadn’t been with a girl for a while. Whatever the reason, he was going to find someone tonight.

His urges were also aggravated because he wasn’t as active as he used to be. Usually, he was always at the lab, with friends, or on trips. Though he worked in the underground lab at their house, it wasn’t the same as going to the central lab.

It was fun being with his sisters. They had bonded more than ever. Of course, they still argued, but more than anything, they were friends. But, as much as he loved his family and appreciated them being around, it wasn’t the same as meeting someone special.

His thought had even turned to marriage occasionally since his father approached him about it. But, with the pandemic, it seemed as though he should just have all the fun if he were going to die anyway. Marriage can go to hell.

  “Party mode activated,” he muttered.

Though the lockdown was eased, laws still restricted movement and socializing, but many clubs broke these laws if they could—especially those located in buildings with concealed areas that could house many people. On the outside, they looked like average houses or stores, but after moving through several doors, they opened up into vast clubs. Not just any type of clubs, exclusive ones.

Most of the clubs attracted a certain type of criminal crowd. Most of the clients were wealthy or had crime connections. The clubs were about business as well as having fun.

That night around 8pm, Brandon drove to Ryan’s house to pick him up.

He’d only been to the club once before, and although it was nice, he still felt it was below his usual standards. However, since most VIP clubs weren’t open, he knew he had to make do.

“What if there aren’t girls in the club?” Ryan asked as they drove.

“I will have to text Tiffany?”

  “Who is Tiffany?”

  “You don’t know her.”

“Or I will text Angel, she is wild in bed.”

“Okay, you can text whoever. Oh, I remember Angel…you were always calling her and meeting up in hotels. You haven’t mentioned her in a while.”

“Well….I texted her a while back and she told me she was in a serious relationship. Couldn’t keep hooking up with me.”

“And now you want to text her….You are joking, right?”

“A month later….she texted me asking if she could come over. I asked her about the relationship. She said they broke up.”

  “Oh…wow…”

“But of course, I had moved on, and then there was the lockdown. She still texts me. I’m sure if I text her now….she will come gladly.”

  “Brandon….my man.”

  “That’s me …….”

They laughed, and Brandon increased the sound of the car music along with the car’s speed. They both danced to the sound of the music and excitedly yelled into the silent night.

They got to the club, and Brandon felt he’d made the right decision when he stepped in and saw the club was full of girls.

Brandon didn’t want to sleep with just anyone, though; he wanted someone special. This is why when he saw Christiana George, he knew she was the one for him. He found a table with Ryan, and they ordered drinks. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get a private lounge as they were all fully booked, but the manager, who was excited to have Brandon in the club, told them he would try his best to get them a lounge.

Throughout the night, women tried to catch his attention, but he ignored them. He had eyes for only one person. He observed as she danced and laughed with her friends.

  What was she doing here?

She was probably tired of being locked up at home as well and decided to visit any available club. Christiana George was a famous hip-hop singer who won the hearts of young people worldwide.

He had met her once before, but it had been a brief meeting. He’d liked her instantly, though. As far as he knew, she wasn’t in a relationship. He could be wild, but he wasn’t into cheating. The few relationships he’d been in had always been faithful. Unless the girl agreed to an open relationship, he kept watching Christiana, hoping she would be alone soon. He needed to talk to her.

She stepped out from the group she was discussing with and headed straight for the door. He got up and signaled to Ryan that he would be back. She was almost at the door when he called out her name.

  “Christiana!”

  She turned sharply.

  “Hey, how are you?

“Do I know you?” she asked, obviously trying to place his face.

“I’m not sure. But I am Brandon Demarco,” he said deliberately using his surname.

  “Oh…The Demarco we all know?”

  “Yeah.”

“Oh…I remember you. We met sometime last year at the gala.”

  “Yesss….” He responded, smiling.

“Wow, nice meeting you again, Brandon,” she said, smiling back.

  “Are you leaving already?”

“Nah,….just need to pick something up from my car.”

“Okay, do you mind if I join you?”

  “Of course not…sure.”

He walked her to her car, and instead of going back into the club, they spent time talking for about twenty minutes leaning on her car. When Brandon became confident that they had chemistry, he suggested they leave the club and hang out somewhere else. She agreed.

He went back into the club and gave his car keys to Ryan, leaving with her in her car. They went to a hotel and started making out in the elevator before they even got to the room. Brandon had sex with her into the early hours of the morning.

Panting hard and falling back on her side of the bed around 6am, she said, “Not a word about this to anyone.”

“One last round, Christiana, and I won’t tell a soul.”

  She laughed. “Aren’t you tired?”

“I could never be tired of you, Christiana. I haven’t had sex this good in a long time.“

“Huhh…that’s what you all say…. but you are not so bad yourself. The Demarco’s aren’t just clever. They’re also good in bed.”

“I am honored to have been the one to pioneer that narrative,” he said, pulling her close.
